St Albans Chess Club welcomes chess players of all levels. 

We meet on Monday evenings from 7.30 pm at The County Club, 29 Ridgmont Road. Our venue is a short walk from St Albans City Thameslink (platform 4).

Although there is a small car park behind The County Club, it is often full. Otherwise, off-peak parking is available at St Albans City rail station from 5.00pm, Monday to Friday. Use APCOA parking app to make payment. 

Beginning 1st October 2026, the club will also meet on Thursday evenings from 7.30pm for Social Chess and occasional training sessions. No home league games are scheduled on Thursdays.

St Albans club competes in local League and Cup matches organised by Hertfordshire Chess Association (HCA) and Hertford & District League. The League runs from October to May with play normally beginning at 7.45pm.

Many club members also play County Chess on Saturdays, when Hertfordshire teams compete in both the East Anglian (EACU) and Southern Counties (SCCU) County Championships. In previous seasons Hertfordshire have progressed to the ECF national knock-out finals.

The club also organises St Albans Chess Congress, an annual weekend Swiss tournament, which next takes place at St Columba's College on Saturday 10th & Sunday 11th April 2027.
