Peter Charles Baker

12th April 1940 - 1st July 2026

Peter was a keen member of St Albans Chess Club for many years and captained the St Albans 6th team in the Hertfordshire League. He also enjoyed playing weekend tournaments including St Albans and Bury St Edmunds.

Under Peter's captaincy, the Hertfordshire U120 county team enjoyed great success, winning the Southern Counties Championship Harry Woolverton Trophy on five times in six years (2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016). In 2012 Peter's team did particularly well in progressing to the ECF National Final where they finished runners up to Essex.

Until his health let him down, Peter was a stalwart of the Amsters annual weekend trips to play other chess clubs in Europe.

Peter will be remembered as a very generous, cheerful and kind fellow.
