Ray Claret is the First Winner of the Lavers Ladder

The Lavers Ladder was introduced in the 2010-2011 season in memory of one of St. Albans Chess Club's former long-time members, Norman Lavers, who died in 2010.  Norman's family donated generously towards the cost of a commemorative trophy - an exquisitely made American Walnut plaque, with engraving tabs for the names of the next 24 winners.

This quick-play competition has proved to be a great success with most of the twenty seven club members who have taken part.  It has encouraged diversity in our choice of opponents, and helped to create a competitive, but jovial, environment in which to practice our enthusiasm for chess.

The semi-finals, and final, were contested by the four at the top of the Ladder, on June 6th – Terry Douse, Angelo Colacino, Matthew James, and Ray Claret.  Following two exciting semis, the final pairing was between Terry (who had to win, as he had the white pieces) and Ray. This was a closely fought contest, with mistakes from both sides, but in the end, and with the seconds ticking away, Ray completed his ascension to the top.

Ray is shown here receiving his trophy at the 2011 AGM from Mrs Margaret Dean, daughter of Norman Lavers.
