Competitions

The club organises a wide range of competitions, giving members opportunity to play as much competitive chess as they like.

Members of our teams in the Hertfordshire League can play up to twelve competitive matches a season (six home, six away) against other Hertfordshire-based teams.  (Die-hards can play more, by acting as reserves for other St Albans teams.)  We have seven teams competing in this league, with five boards competing at each match.

We also enter teams into the county's four knockout tournaments (open, U160, U140 and U120).

There is an annual internal club championship for the Silver Rook trophy.

Every year the club organises the South Herts Congress over a weekend just before Easter, where there is always a good turnout of players from our club.

St Albans Chess Club members represent Hertfordshire at all levels (open, U160, U140 and U120).

Every club night, you can play friendly games with other club members, or play several games in the Lavers Ladder - our club rapid play (15 minutes) ladder tournament.

Each season starts with a twenty-board competition against Watford Chess Club, and ends with a friendly internal rapid play tournament (followed by a curry!).
