The Lavers Ladder was introduced in the 2010-2011 season in memory of one of St. Albans Chess Club's former long-time members, Norman Lavers, who died in 2010. Norman's family donated generously towards the cost of a commemorative trophy - an exquisitely made American Walnut plaque, with engraving tabs for the names of the next 24 winners.
This quick-play competition has proved to be a great success with most of the twenty seven club members who have taken part. It has encouraged diversity in our choice of opponents, and helped to create a competitive, but jovial, environment in which to practice our enthusiasm for chess.
Ray is shown here receiving his trophy at the 2011 AGM from Mrs Margaret Dean, daughter of Norman Lavers.
