About the Club

If you would like to play chess, either in matches or just socially, then you are assured of a warm welcome.

We have seven teams in the seven divisions of the Hertfordshire League (each playing twelve or fourteen matches per year).  We also enter teams into the county's four knockout tournaments (open, U160, U140 and U100).  There is an internal club championship for the "Silver Rook' trophy and a friendly ladder competition (the Lavers' Ladder) for 15 minute games.  At the start of the season we have an annual twenty-board match against Watford (the Cheshire Board).

Aside from the regular club nights, handicap tournaments are played at Christmas and the last club night of June, and the club champion gives a simultaneous display in September.

St Albans Chess Club is affiliated with the Hertfordshire Chess Association (HCA). The Hertfordshire County teams, which play in competitions at Open, Under 160, Under 140 and Under 120 levels, all include strong representation from members of the St Albans Chess Club.
